SURVIVAL ENGLISH CLASSES

For 25 years Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees (HWHR) provided culturally appropriate programs that include Survival English classes, adult literacy (including Alfabetizasyon Basic Education in Native Language for non-literate adults), and job searching skills to better prepare them to attain the reading, writing and communication skills they sought to gain employment and/or pursue further education. Meanwhile participants learned about job negotiation skills, workers rights and immigrant rights to counter worker exploitation and racist policies and practices faced in complex immigration processes.   Students in this program attended classes on weekday evenings after work, and participated in Haitian Workers Project workshops every spring.  Over the years, participants worked as  home care workers (home health aides, personal care aides, home attendants), domestic workers, factory workers, street vendors, restaurant workers, car wash workers and day laborers.  Classes are no longer offered at HWHR, as demographics have shifted.
