Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees was among the founding groups of National Domestic Workers Alliance in 2007 when about 30 women-led organizations gathered at the US Social Forum and recognized the need for collective power on a national scale to defend the rights of care workers.  A series of workshops were lead by Domestic Workers United (DWU) from New York.  DWU and the NY Domestic Workers Justice Coalition launched the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights campaign, building on a powerful movement to bear with the passage of the nation’s first comprehensive legislation extending basic rights and protections to domestic workers. The historic New York State Domestic Workers Bill of Rights was signed into law on August 31, 2010, the first in the nation that set precedence for other states to follow.
